Afonso C. Silva received his B.S. (1990) and M.S. (1992) degrees in Electrical Engineering from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, in Recife, Brazil. He then moved to the USA, and in 1996 he received his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in September of 1996. After doing his postdoctoral training in brain physiology at the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Silva joined NINDS as a Staff Scientist in the summer of 1999, and became a tenure-track investigator and Head of the Cerebral Microcirculation Unit in December, 2004. Dr. Silva’s main research interests are to understand the mechanisms of regulation of cerebral blood flow during increased focal brain activity, and to understand how the CBF adjustments relate to the spatial and temporal changes in electrical activity.

Dr. Silva is a husband and father of two. His main hobby interests are swimming, fitness, running and tropical fish keeping.
